Why didn’t I grow up in Germany?

Behold, the Schultüte! This nifty cone is filled with treats and school supplies and given to kiddies by their parents on the first day of school (as in first grade – I doubt older kids would want these… except for me). This cone is an old German tradition, and these days they can be found in many varieties, decorated in any way to please the persnickity youth.

According to Wikipedia, parents used to bring the Schultüten to the schools, where they would be hung on a metal “Schultüten-Baum”. The kids are led to believe that the Schultütenbaum grows at the school and that when it’s fruits ripen – the Schultüten – it’s time to go to school.
